Master Sound has been in business since 1979. It started as a private production studio and quickly expanded into a full blown 24 track commercial facility by late 1983. By 1987 it became Tidewater Virginia's largest and most technically advanced studio boasting 48 track 2" analog recording with an Amek G 2520 automated recording console with 96 inputs on mixdown. And the studio had recorded such diverse artists as Glen Campbell, Debby Boone, Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr., Phil Keaggy, Wayne Watson, Sheila Walsh and many others.
As the studio gained a reputation for quality production and engineering at affordable rates it began to pull in national business with producers recording major albums for Capitol records, Elektra, Atlantic Records, Polygram/EMI, Universal Records, Sony, Little Man, MJJ, Scotti Bros./CBS, Def Jam, Hollywood Records, MCA, Warner Bros., etc.. In 1990 the studio upgraded to a Studer A-827 Analog 24 Track and shortly following began working with Producers Teddy Riley (Producer for Michael Jackson), Michael Bivens ( Bel Biv Divoe, Boyz To Men), Greg Nelson ( Sandy Patti, Sheila Walsh, Larnelle Harris), Phil Nash ( Michael W. Smith, Steven Curtiss Chapman), and Brent Havens ( Film scorer, Producer of Glen Campbell, Debby Boone, Crystal Gayle and Eddie Rabbitt). More recently the studio has recorded albums and singles for blockbuster artists such as Missy Elliott, Timbaland/McGoo, Toni Braxton, Lil' Kim, Total, Kut Klose, Snoop Dog, SWV, Genuwine and Playa.
The studio steadily upgraded and presently has an arsenal of outboard gear and esoteric extras that are rarely found in today's control rooms. Since the studio is not in a larger production/recording market such as New York or LA, it has ensured quality production not from rental companies but from its own array of outboard gear such as its 6 Avalon 737 SPs, Avalon AD2044 Stereo Opto, Avalon AD2055 2 Channel Class A Discrete parametric EQ, Neve Medici 2 Channel Mastering EQ, TC Electronic M-5000 two engines, LA-2A, 2 Summit DCL-200s, 3 ADL-1000s, 9 NEVE 9098 mic pre EQs, 6 Millenia Media mic pres, Demeter Mic Pres, 4 AKG C-12s, Neumann U-67,U87, U-89a, U-47 Tube, 2 TLM-170s, 2 AKG C-414 TL IIs, Lexicon 300L, 2 Eventide H-3000 SE-D/SX. Master Sound has recently completed a 5,000 square foot two-story addition and has already completed projects in the new Studio B for such artists and clients as Monifah, Jack Knight (Universal), Men of Vision (Sony, MJJ), Family Channel and Reebok.
The downstairs room , (studio B), is equipped to handle extensive tracking. It has a large main "live" room with 5 isolation rooms surrounding and looking into the main room. It's acoustically designed for live recording of drums and has a wonderful (natural), "open" sound for vocal recording.
All in all this 3 room facility is equipped to handle just about any audio production from basic voice-over and sync to picture to full-blown orchestral film scoring.
